"a city with my name on, i will enter in disguise"~ Jackie Leven.

Jackie Leven playing Hebden Bridge Trades Club,August  2010.Phil The -Ex-Fireman lends an ear ,far left of the photo.
Jackie Leven [wikipedia] died from Prostrate Cancer on Monday night at 8pm.
[In a Shivering Blaze by Jackie Leven]
Usually ,media announcements of death leave me cold.To mourn a passing you must,i think, have some physical connection.Only friends & family have the right of grief.
Look .I like Bob Dylan.I have seen him play often. But when he dies i doubt if I should really care.I have never  had a wish meet him.[I suspect he's as mad as a bucket of frogs]
I will mourn Bob's back catalogue.I will mourn the fact that it indicates my own mortality. But, Bob's Pulse itself doesn't really  touch me individually .
Jackie is different.in the late 70s in my grotty East London ;Acid-Soaked bedsit, i had developed a fairly eclectic taste in music.[I talked about this period of my life in this old post ].The likes of Nick Drake,The Only Ones, & a couple of LPs by a punkish band called Doll By Doll  graced my turntable... I knew little about Doll by Doll:never saw them play. +Eventually I forgot..........
In the middle 80's i was introduced to a cd by Jackie.I was attracted by the Leven /Fife connection. My Mum had lived as a child in Leven. It was only later I realised Jackie was the Voice of Doll by Doll....so it goes...
My first Jackie Leven cd had contributions from the likes of Robert Bly & the whole Mens Movement thing.
At this time I was having all sorts of Stress & Depression Problems with my teaching career . Jackie helped me find my balls again.
[Defending Ancient Springs by Jackie Leven]
From then on I was hooked.I saw him play live 5 times at The Hebden Bridge Trades Club & once at The Bury Met.It was at Bury in 2008,with Cathy,Don& Margaret, I saw Jackie play the week between my Mum Dying &  My Burying Her.
Unknown to Jackie, he told a wildly funny story about him trying to scatter his own Mum's ashes. In a very counter-intuitive way, I laughed for the only time that week...it really helped me to cope with my own loss.
I only took up 2 minutes of Jackie's Life.
Twice I talked to him in The Hebden Bridge Trades.Once ,just a simple "Good Gig Jackie".The other time, we talked about how Jackie had had a "dodgy curry in Bradford" the night before...and his fear of having to leave the stage midstream to go to the bog..........(a conversation held appropriately ,during the Interval,in The Trades Club toilets)
God Speed Dear Jackie.I Love You but,for fuck sake, say well away from that  Jimmy Savile! X

A Private Jackie Leven Audio Sent Me Yesterday

Mostly an Interview .Jackie talks about his Heroin Addiction: his meeting Princess Dianne & Psychic Healing + he plays 3 songs. One or two wee gaps & ominous silences in the audio...but be patient, in seconds the sound returns....and it's all, otherwise Good Quality sound. By the way , I took this photo of Jackie during one of his many visits to The Hebden Bridge Trades Club. Jackie Leven On BBC
"Jackie Leven on top form with Johnnie Walker on BBC Radio 2, about 15 years ago. He opens with an effortless wisecrack reference to Paul McCartney, which gets Johnnie guffawing.
Since I live in Sardinia, I had to record this from shortwave radio in the days before decent internet connection, which explains the couple of little gaps. Nevertheless, the whole thing is worth a listen. My old friend sparkles and shines."

museum of childhood......

".....It means a fallow field in winter
When frost is on the land
when the fox is on the run down by the riverside
where the furrow meets the sun
where the furrow hugs the riverbank
and nothing can be done...."

Another Jackie Leven song ."Museum of Childhood".Live: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Leven

poortoun : "a city with my name on, i will enter in disguise" : Jackie Leven.

see all this week's sepia saturday posts

I am having incredible lucid dreams at the moment: like a box-set I keep getting repeats of 'Previous Espisodes'. Mostly of places I used to live. Hebden Bridge:Halifax:Cheshire:Liverpool:London's East End;London's City ..etc. Warm dreams...but I wake up wondering where I am now......No Partisan!

Jackie Leven:Winchester: 2001. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Leven
It's 7 years since dear sweet Jackie died.......
here   is my post from that time...........
This week's sepia saturday theme is around that of "bedroom".
Here are two photos I took of my bedroom in 1972.
I can date them fairly well, due to the wall display.
I was back at my Mum & Dad's house in Halifax after a year in the City of London youth hostel where I had been working.
I display a pencil sketch of me drawn by a lass from Wales. Some underground newspapers & graphics from OZ magazine on the wall.
No Maps you notice? Just a calendar.
Within months, I was off to Liverpool & teacher training college.
This was my security between the two......
Strange to say, I feel myself ( a little) in that same place again...

Sugar Ray Leonard

Helping the police with their enquiries ;)  (with Nodge & Steve). No doubt i will write a post sometime about the times I have  tangled with the Police. several  funny ;several not so. As a taster, did you know i was interviewed by two detectives during the Yorkshire Ripper search? Anyway. That's for another time......i certainly feel i want to be more autobiographical here, this year.......fuck the 'mystery'!
Exclusive:watch a video of Nigel Farage's latest thoughts on Brexit :

Why on Earth is that prick Nigel Farage still being interviewed  on TV News?
He is no longer UKIP's leader.
He has stood 7 times for Westminster and never been successful .
He's just a  Mussolini-in-tweed.
Although, I recall,Benito was also well hung

I was due to be going out drinking in Sowerby Bridge tonight with Phil & Ken & Bryn.Unfortunately,Phil rang to cancel until next week (worries around snow).
So I,m sat at home having "the few beers " I promised myself this morning.Hence the Smörgåsbord  of a post this will ,no doubt, become .....!
Ihavnt had a drink in ten days & 'have swum 5 miles this week.. Enough Goodness!
 previous Cask & Feathers
I go to see Bob in Bacup on Monday .We are arranging a curry with him,Nodge,Jim ,Steve,Ken ,Phil etc in Ramsbottom in a few weeks time.
on the way home I have an appointment to do some heavy-breathing with my Asthma Nurse in Hebden Bridge.

. Also on the cards ,in the next couple of weeks, another curry in Rochdale with Daz,Jim S,Tony T,Martin (Thorpe) the Landlord of The Cask & Feathers (who's name always escapes me).Hydn,Phil & Ken
Also next week ,I visit a contact of my friend from Halifax,Israr Hussain.( i first met Israr via Halifax Swimming Pool) I am buying and promoting  Dates & Olive Oil produced in Palestine. The proceeds go to support a childrens charity there.
No doubt here & on facebook i will be reporting about the fine work the charity does in Halifax
(nb my brother Zyg has put an order in for oil & dates and the possibility of wine?)
Chris liam from Portland Oragon donated the track specifically to this blog..The other track"Museum of Childhood" is sung by the late  Jackie Leven. One of the nicest people i have ever personally met

Israr Hussain.( image from a portrait displayed at Dean Clough Gallery, Halifax )
Israr is a lovely bloke (he went to Crossleys School). He's told me some really funny stories about his various travels. He concides, he doesn't have the most "airoplane-friendly" 'look' post9/11 !
Over the last few weeks this blog has been bombarded with hundreds of threatening messages (this is the least of it). I have ignored up until now, but maybe i can smoke the person out? I will post here ,in this thread, any future messages....."Clutch " away, honey!
